The Liebster Award: Keep Your Sand Away From Me!

Revolution mermaid palette, red lipstick, Max Factor Masterpiece eyeliner and Intimately Beckham perfume
Dramatically-angled photo of my fave eye-shadow palette. Yes, I did stab a hole in the brown. Yes, those are my curtains in the mirror. Yes, I do realise how terrible I am at photography. #SorryNotSorry

The lovely Britney and Michelle have both nominated me for the Liebster Award, which means I get to take a break from the usual posts and answer some fun questions. I haven’t been nominated for anything like this for ages, so thank you, Britney and Michelle!

The rules:

1. Acknowledge the blogger who nominated you.
2. Answer the 11 questions given to you by the blogger who nominated you.
3. Nominate 11 other bloggers
4. Ask 11 new questions for them to answer.

Britney’s Questions

1. What is your zodiac sign, and which zodiac sign do you think you are the most and least compatible with?
I’m a Scorpio, but I don’t really believe any particular star signs are compatible with each other. I think every person is different and you can’t judge compatibility based on the month your partner was born in. However, according to an astrology page I just read, my star sign and Andy’s star sign may struggle for the first year of our relationship, but after that we’ll probably last forever. Hopefully he’ll learn how to put his jeans in the basket during that time!

2. Would you rather live on the lake or on the beach?
I wouldn’t really want to live on either, but if I had to choose it’d probably be the lake. Because I couldn’t bear having sand everywhere!

3. How many states and/or countries have you been to?
I live in England and I’ve been to Ireland, Scotland and Wales. So that’s four.

Yes, I’ve never left this part of the world. Yes, I realise how boring that is.

4. Where is your favourite vacation spot?
I’ve not really been to many places, but my favourite so far is London. I just love how big it is, and how you can spend days and days there and still have tonnes left to do. There’s something different around every corner and it’s so exciting!

5. Are you an introvert, extrovert, or somewhere in between?
Definitely an introvert. I love socialising, but I could never be someone who’s around crowds of people all the time. I need time to myself to recharge. Plus, I find it difficult to approach and speak to new people, especially in large groups.

6. How would you describe your style?
Socially acceptable goth-nerd chic. Basically, I love a dark pair of jeans, black shirts and/or geeky T-Shirts, a pair of boots, a leather jacket and chokers/leather bracelets. Except I like to blend into a crowd too, so it’s never anything that makes a statement. Just something quite plain, which I can feel like a complete, total bad-ass in.

Note: I don’t actually look like a “complete, total bad-ass”, I just like to play MIA on full volume and pretend I am.

7. What is your favourite shade(s) of lipstick to wear?
Dark red or purple, because I love bold colours!

8. Do you prefer blush or bronzer?
Blush. I’m way too pale for bronzer!

9. Are there any beauty brands that you absolutely love?
I’m not really big on beauty products, but I love Revolution’s eye-shadow palettes. They do so many colours and they’re not too pricey, plus their packaging is amazing. I recently bought the mermaid one and it’s so pretty! (See above photo)

10. What is the last album that you listened to?
Black Widow by In This Moment. It’s one of my favourite albums of all time. I love alternative metal and Maria Brink’s voice is just so powerful. Plus the lyrics are so empowering!

11. What was the last concert you went to?
Kate Nash in February. Me and my friend were dancing so ridiculously by the side of the stage that we were invited on stage to dance with her! It was amazing!

Michelle’s Questions

1. When is the last time you truly noticed something in your life? Where you surprised? Thankful? Sad? Regretful?
Recently, I’ve noticed how many wonderful people in my life and I’m so thankful for that. I really am very lucky.

2. What books or t.v shows etc; truly resonated with you recently?
The last book that really resonated with me was The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer. It focuses on how she learned that asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of, and how it can help you to achieve what you want and make your life better. It made me realise how important it is to take chances, even if they terrify you. Definitely an inspiring read!

3. What breed of dog would you get if you could? Or would you like a cat, instead? Or another animal?
I’d either want an English bulldog, a Dalmatian, a pig or an alpaca. I definitely wouldn’t want a cat, as I’m allergic!

4. What is the shortest time you spent away from the computer and your smartphone?
I think the only time I spend away from my laptop and smartphone is when I sleep. Recently, I’ve been trying to spend less time online, but it’s not been going well. I always want to check everything!

5. What’s the craze you went through in your adolescence? It could be a generational thing or a decade thing.
When I was in high school, everyone was obsessed with scoobies, which were plastic strings that you’d weave into bracelets. Loads of kids used to sell their pre-made bracelets and I was stupid enough to actually buy one for way more than it was worth. This is why I can’t afford a mortgage right now!

6. What is your raison d’être? Your reason to be?
I’ve never really thought about it, but I guess it would just be to be as happy as possible and try to achieve the things I want in life.

7. What’s the longest time you stayed up? Shortest time you slept?
In April, I ended up staying up for 23 hours while a drunk Andy washed everyone else’s political opinions off himself, cleaned the bathroom with my underwear, and fell out of the “magic washroom”. As funny as that sounds, I was not happy.

The shortest time I slept was when I went to London for my 21st birthday. I needed to be up at 4, but couldn’t sleep because the neighbours were on their usual drink and drugs spree and spent the entire night blasting out Ed Sheeran. I ended up going round London on one hours sleep. It wasn’t good!

8. What’s in a name? What does your name mean to you? Do you like it?
My name’s always meant getting confused over whether people are shouting me or other Amys, and never being able to get a domain name using my name. It’s way too common!

9. Is my doggo Marley, so adorable? Don’t you like Labradors?
Yes, Marley is adorable! I love Labradors!

10. What is your biggest fear?
Losing the people I love.

11. How do you feel about giant man eating spiders?
Absolutely terrified.

I nominate:

  1. My camera is more than 4 years old now. I still love it even though there are times I appreciate my camera phone more due to his extensive collection of filters.

  2. I agree with you, you can’t judge compatibility based on your astrology! My boyfriend and I are not supposed to be compatible based on our star sign, which makes me even more skeptical about astrology… Though, it’s always good to believe when there are good traits ;). Oh man, I wouldn’t like having sand all over the house either. Definitely picking lake as well!

I’ve seen a lot of people posting pictures of their London adventures and it looks great! (Low key jelly of Chynna living there XD). I’ve been trying to spend less time online lately as well. I turn off notifications for this reason XD. Less buzz = less checking!

If I can give advice to my younger self, it would be:
“Don’t be lazy! Work hard and some good things can come your way”.

  3. Thanks for answering the questions. They were a good read. I’m a Scorpio as well, but from my own experience I do think there are zodiac signs I clash with. Leo, in particular. My mom is a Leo as well as my ex-boyfriend. I am totally opposites of both of them and we both always butted heads a lot. I’m really pale also, but I love bronzer. I feel like it gives me a nice subtle glow and makes me look less sickly. I like blush too, but I have to be careful with it or I look like a have a sunburn. lol

That sucks you’re allergic to cats. Their claws don’t really bother me, but both of mine are declawed in front. I actually have a claw problem with dogs. Whenever I go to someone’s house with a dog, they always jump on me and I leave with claw marks on my leg. I don’t like that. I’ve actually never had that problem with cats.

  4. Ah! It’s been a while since I saw the Liebster Award make its round 🙂 It’s always fun to learn more about people and see answers to these questions. This also made me realized I never looked up my husband’s zodiac sign or whether we’re compatible, haha. I guess that shows how much I actually pay attention to that stuff!

I like the way you describe your style, and I like the combo of goth and nerd! I tend to go for cute and nerdy, and like you, I’m not really trying to make a statement. I just want to wear cute stuff that doesn’t stand out XD

Ooh, I haven’t heard of The Art of Asking, but I totally agree that there’s nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to asking for help. I’m also allergic to cats! My attempts to spend less time online don’t go well either. One time, I put up a social site blocker for the day, and it made me realize how many times I subconsciously check things (only to be met with a blocked page).

    I liked reading your answers!

  5. Ooo Liebster! I’m also not a fan of sand so I can only handle the beach in small doses. It’s probably one of the reasons I enjoy living near the beautiful beach in Northern California, because the water’s so cold that nobody goes there and it’s great for photography!

Man, there’s so much to do in those four countries that I bet you can still keep traveling around them! I’ve never been to Europe but the UK & Ireland seem so full of culture and differences. I’d love to travel there!

Recently I really really seem to like French bulldogs for some reason. Their squishy faces are just irresistible.

I also have trouble getting a domain with my name – not because of my first name, but because my last name is so short and common that it’s always taken! I’m sometimes jelly of people who have interesting names just because their domains can sound so much cooler!

  6. Oh my goodness I remember scoobies. They were all the rage when I was in high school too! I had so many different colours and I tied them all on a string and somehow made it into a really cool crown 😂 It was wicked as.

I have heard of that book by Amanda Palmer but never read it 😮 I might have to one day, it sounds really inspiring.

I totally understand what you mean by your style being “socially acceptable”. When I was in high school I identified as a goth/punk but I didn’t like to stand out too much so I tried to be somewhat “conservative” still lol.

I might answer your questions here since I don’t really do these awards as blog posts anymore 🙂

    1. What are your five favourite books?
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is my favourite. I love Lang Leav’s poetry and I like a lot of Bryce Courtenay books including Matthew Flinders’ Cat, Brother Fish, and Jessica.

    2. Are you a morning or an evening person?
I have always maintained that I am a morning person, however recently I’ve noticed that although I love mornings and getting an early start to everything, I don’t feel very “productive”. I feel most productive in the evenings to be honest – the late evenings, like now – it’s 10pm.

    3. If you had to be a drink, what drink would you be and why?
I feel like whenever I answer questions like these I tend to choose my favourites because I think they suit me a lot. I love any cocktail with blue curaçao, so I’m gonna go with anything with that. 😉

    4. What’s the best thing that’s happened to you this year?
I am about to cry internally because I know you wrote this post in 2017 but it’s now 2018 and I feel like a shitty friend o m g. In 2017 the best thing that happened was probably that I got married! ☺️ This year? Hmmm… probably the fact that I’ve been working out my glutes at the gym and my butt is getting bigger, exactly what I wanted 🤣

    5. How much time do you spend on the Internet?
UMMMM Amy I work ON the internet so it’s basically at least 8-9 hours a day. I’m always “connected”. In the mornings before work I probably do some messaging online (not just text – so I do need the internet), but it’s not a lot of time. In the evenings I definitely spend a good few hours on the internet too. Most of my hobbies are online.

    6. What is your favourite vegetable?
    Spinach 🤤

    7. What was the last thing you bought?
I ate KFC for dinner. 😆 If you’re talking material stuff, I just bought some jeans online, but they haven’t been shipped yet. Told you I do everything on the internet.

    8. Where did you last go on holiday?
It wasn’t really a holiday but I went to Melbourne, another capital city in Australia. I was there for a long weekend. Prior to that, I was in Japan for my honeymoon last year.

    9. Who’s the last person you messaged?
I messaged my really good friend Monica. We were talking about clothes. Haha.

    10. What’s your favourite thing about blogging?
I really love writing, and blogging is effectively writing, so – right at the source there. I love writing. Next on the list would be sharing my story and thus meeting other people online who also share their stories.

    11. What advice would you give to your younger self?
Enjoy your single life more 🙏 Since my first ever relationship (I was young – I was 12 almost 13), the maximum amount of time I was single was a year.

    1. I’m so glad you answered these on here – I loved reading your answers! I can’t believe you had your first relationship at 12! You were so much cooler than me – I was 18 when I first had a boyfriend and partially because my mum said I wasn’t allowed one till I was 18. I was such a good teenager!
