My Happy Things

Some chocolates and the first Harry Potter book
Oh look at this moody, edgy lighting. It’s almost as if someone took her photos at 8pm on an evening in a badly lit house, and then couldn’t retake them because all the chocolates had mysteriously disappeared. How strange.

I started this list in January. I was feeling really down on a Saturday afternoon, and was really desperate to cheer myself up somehow. Self-care is a big thing at the moment, and I’ve seen so many people taking photos of colourful bath water, books and candles. But I’m not a bath person. We don’t even have a bath. And I didn’t think dropping £20 of Lush products on my head in the shower with candles at my feet would do much for my mood. As funny as that would’ve been.

I wanted a list that I could look at whenever I needed cheering up. One that was specific, where I wouldn’t have to read through endless suggestions that weren’t relevant to me. Candles might be popular for self-care but as a clumsy, forgetful young woman, using actual fire to cheer myself up seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. Have you seen the scene in Desperate Housewives where Susan knocks over a candle and sets fire to Edie’s whole house? Yeah, I’m a Susan.

So, instead of trying to find my self-care list soulmate, I decided to write down what made me happy. My happy things. A list that wouldn’t result in setting fire to my curtains and getting a bath product induced concussion. I hope you enjoy reading it!

Note: I am not responsible for any bath product induced concussions that may befall you as a result of reading this post.

Things To Do To Cheer Myself Up

1. Watch the best 80 seconds of Riverdance
Yes, I did just watch this and count the seconds to make this post as accurate as possible. You’re welcome.

2. Paint my nails
But only do one coat. Happiness is not built on smudgy, clumpy nail polish.

3. Watch Cougar Town
The happiest show that’s ever existed. When can I move to Florida and drink wine with my best friends?!

4. Read Harry Potter
And imagine that I’m a real-life wizard.

5. Watch Harry Potter
Just not the fourth one. Never the fourth one.

6. Be a dick to all the other Sims in the neighbourhood
Where else can I yell at people unnecessarily?

7. Do some shoeless tap dancing
Because my landlady is yet to install a tap-dancing-friendly room.

8. Make a hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows
Use a nice mug as well. Because nice mugs make everything better.

9. Build something out of Lego
There’s something strangely therapeutic about having to build the same section five times because I don’t know how to Lego.

10. Do some colouring
I always find colouring really relaxing, even though I’m not very good at it!

11. Watch series 5 episode 14 of Friends
The one where everyone finds out that Monica and Chandler are together. Because Monica and Chandler are the best.

12. Look through photos from high school years
Andy thinks it’s strange that I do this so much, but I love looking through old photos of me and my friends. Those were the days!

13. Watch the Garfunkel and Oates TV show
Just the theme tune is enough to make me feel better about life.

14. Sing In This Moment songs in my best screamo metal voice
This one probably has a negative effect on the moods of everyone around me, but never mind.

15. Go for a walk
Preferably somewhere pretty and scenic and not just the local Sainsbury’s.

16. Watch The Guru
This might be a low-budget, bargain basement film with incredibly poor ratings, but I love it so much. It always makes me feel like I’m 11 years old with no adult problems. It’s the best.

17. Make a list of all the good things in my life
Seeing this on paper always makes me so much happier.

18. Watch Amanda Palmer music videos
And pretend to be equally edgy.

19. Buy a nice box of chocolates
And don’t share them with anyone.

20. Read a funny book
My favourites are How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson and Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh.

So that’s it. My happy list. Hopefully a good amount of colouring and getting into fights with fictional characters will have me turning my mood around faster than Michael Flatley can move his feet. (If you haven’t watched Riverdance then just know that he’s incredibly fast, and I will be forever jealous of his dancing skills).

Let me know what your happy things are in the comments below!

  1. That’s a great idea, writing down things that make you happy. I need to do that some days when I’m feeling dumpy. Your hot chocolate one with lots of marshmallows sounds really appealing right now.

  2. Haha I LOVE this list! And I HATE baths. Apparently as women, we’re supposed to like them… But I get SO bored, and then do this weird thing where I don’t want to submerge my hands.. and after 5 whole minutes I’m completely over it. Hot chocolate with an obnoxious amount of marshmallows is absolutely on my list. And it’s even better if you’re reading Harry Potter while you drink it!
Hope you’re holding your head up girl!

  3. I totally feel like playing the Sims now. Just the other day, my coworker and I were discussing how many possible ways there are to kill your Sim family and probably the most creative way that we did it. I think we’re disturbed.

I loved your list. This was such a good idea.

  4. I didn’t realize that self-care has been a thing until recently. So this is what adulting feels like? Hahahaha

It’s good that you brainstormed a list of things to cheer yourself up! Haha, who needs to drop $$$ on retail therapy now? Not you

When I saw watch The Guru, I got confused and thought you meant that Love Guru movie, haha. Yesss to painting nails! That’s one great way to deter your focus. I love how you mentioned chocolate twice as well ;).

  5. I think your featured photo is really great, even if it was in bad light. I have to take most of my photos in bad indoor lighting too. I chuckled at your caption!

I actually hate painting my nails for some reason. I like the look of it, of course. I’m just extremely lazy. I finally painted my nails for the first time in months last week. They’re starting to chip now though.

I didn’t like the fourth Harry Potter the first time I saw it, but then it grew on me. The 5th one is one I cannot stand.

  6. Reading this list made me think of The Sound of Music. It made me happy even though they aren’t the same things that make me happy. Chocolates and Harry Potter though ^_^ that would definitely make me happy.

  7. Hello. It’s nice to see people’s happy lists and what makes them happy. I notice every time that it’s the small things that make us happy. Your list is really nice.

  8. I remember starting a list of “100 things that make me happy”. It was with my ex though, and I think I wrote a lot of it in one sitting without actually thinking hard about what makes me happy. I think the idea though, was that it can be really easy to find things, big or small, that make you happy 🙂

I think that painting my nails also cheers me up quite a bit too. I’m fucking impatient waiting for that shit to dry though, so I go to the salon and get gel/shellac done maybe once every 2 or 3 months. And I buy nail wraps/stickers which is a lot more fun than waiting for drying polish haha.

I used to do tap-dancing when I was younger and I miss it! I don’t have tap shoes now, either. I just remember it being very fun and if money was no object (and time was no object) I might actually consider taking it up again… ☺️

LEGO! LEGO is awesome! 🎉 I haven’t played with a LEGO set in ages. I think Nick brought some when he moved out, but I had none. I wanted to buy a set but I didn’t think it would get much use, and usually when I don’t think something will get much use I actually avoid buying it haha.
