I Love This Stuff #1

I Love This Stuff is a new series I’ve decided to do, where I’ll be listing the things I’ve been loving lately. It’s kind of like those monthly favourite posts people do, except I won’t be tied down to a specific month, so I won’t have to remember when December ended and January began. These posts also won’t have a set schedule – they’ll just be posted when I’ve got things to talk about, which will make it far easier to maintain. I hope you enjoy the first one!

The past month or so has involved a lot of reading, a lot of eating and a lot of sitting around watching Netflix, so this list is filled with books and shows. And food. Tasty, tasty food.

Without further ado, here’s what I’ve been loving lately!

The OA

This is a Netflix Original series about a blind woman who goes missing for seven years, then comes back able to see and calling herself ‘The OA’. I’d recommend this for anyone who likes creepy atmospheric music, excellent acting and seeing Jason Isaacs without his Lucius Malfoy wig. I watched this over a couple of days, which is rare for me, because I’m usually too busy watching repeats of Gavin and Stacey, so it’s pretty clear how amazing it was.

If you watched this show over my shoulder on the bus, you’ll probably think it’s just a series of sex scenes. If you’re my mum, you’ll probably complain that this is just a series of sex scenes. But it’s not. Though there are quite a few sex scenes.

Sense8 is a Netflix original series about eight people from different areas of the world who become mentally and emotionally linked. It’s a show that breaks down stereotypes, offers a diverse range of characters and focuses on different issues around race, gender and sexuality. The opening music is the best thing ever and it makes it practically impossible to stop watching. And, there’s one episode which involves all the characters singing ‘What’s Up’ by 4 Non Blondes which made me tear up just a little. Yes, I am the girl who accidentally watches sex scenes on the bus then cries – deal with it.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to write to Netflix for cancelling this wonderful show, because they are 100% wrong and it deserves to be on forever.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I’m currently addicted to this game, probably because I get to pretend I’m a badass witcher with cool af powers. I also get to fight monsters, help people find their missing loved ones, and follow trails of clothes from women trying to seduce me.

For some reason I got more experience points for following the trail of clothes than I did for fighting a huge monster. How does this game even work?!

Warning: Werewolves are evil. If you’ve failed to defeat a werewolf 800 times you are not a failure. They are really difficult to beat, and that’s not just because I’m a useless ‘x’ pressing addict who ends up rolling everywhere and messing the camera up.

Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

Jenny Lawson is one of my all-time favourite writers. Before she became a published author, I followed her incredibly hilarious blog The Bloggess, and she has since released two equally hilarious books about her life. Furiously Happy is the second of these, and focuses on dealing with mental illness whilst navigating everyday life. It’s funny from start to finish, and includes the best photo of taxidermied raccoons you will ever see.

The fancy Harry Potter books I didn’t need

Did you know they now do illustrated editions of the first three Harry Potter books, which means you can experience the series again but with the most beautiful illustrations and an even heavier book to hold? These are such a pleasure to read, and are definitely a must for any Harry Potter fan. They release one a year and they’ve done three so far, so it’s definitely not too late to start collecting.

Gotta admit, I am very worried about how heavy the later ones will be. Better start doing some weight training…

The Harry Potter films, which aren’t quite as good as the books but are still very, very good

They are all amazing, in fact. Except the fourth one, which should be cast from the series entirely and remade to fit my requirements. Even though I do like David Tennant and dragons.

Roughneck by Jeff Lemire

Roughneck is one of the best graphic novels I’ve ever read. It’s about an ex ice hockey player, whose sister moves back to town after escaping her abusive boyfriend. It’s an emotional tale of family and violence, which stays with you long after you’ve read it.

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

One of Us is Lying is a book about four teenagers who end up being murder suspects after a boy dies during detention. When I first read the blurb, I thought it was going to be unrealistic and filled with stereotypical teen characters, but I soon realised how very wrong I was. The characters were incredibly well-developed and the plot twists had me shouting “OMG NO” every other chapter. Definitely read this if you get the chance!

Papa John’s Pizza

In December, Papa John’s opened a store near me and I’m addicted. I’ve already invented ‘The Amy’, which is a mushroom, olive, pineapple and bacon pizza* and the most amazing thing you could possibly eat. They do wonderful side orders as well, and their portions are huge! And, you get reward points for buying stuff, which basically turns pizza-buying into a challenge. Yes!

*Yes, pineapple does belong on a pizza. Yes, I am willing to fight you on that.

Anything You Do Say by Gillian McAllister

This is a book about a woman who ends up injuring/killing a man after being convinced he was following her home. It switches between two versions of events: one where she calls the police and tells them what she’s done, and another where she walks away. I was completely gripped by both versions of events, and will now be forever terrified to walk home alone.

The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur

The Sun and Her Flowers is Rupi Kaur’s second poetry collection, following the New York Times bestselling Milk and Honey. I actually enjoyed this book more than the Milk and Honey, as I felt the sections she’d split the book into were more focused and easier to follow. The first section, which focuses on relationships and grief, was my favourite, with every line being so emotional and relatable. Yes, I did cry a little bit. #SorryNotSorry

  1. This is a great idea for a new series. 🙂

I had a friend who is a huge Harry Potter fan and I bought her the illustrated version of the first book for her birthday last year and she loved it. I have to admit I had a quick browser though and it looked beautiful.

Yes, I’m totally for pineapple on pizza (I literally just had a ham and pineapple pizza actually!). I first tried Papa John’s years ago and I wasn’t very impressed, but we tried it again last year and it was much better. I think I prefer it to Domino’s actually. They always get the sauce to cheese ratio spot on!

  2. My go-to pizza ordering is Papa Johns, because they send me coupons and discounts like every day. Almost without fail. So I always have some 50% off or buy one get one free deal waiting for me. Hahaha. People make fun of me for buying from them when I have freaking NY Pizza available to me but… Alas. They don’t give me free pizza.

The OA sounds really interesting. I’ve really enjoyed the newest season of Black Mirror, and this sounds kind of similar, so I think I’m gonna take a look to see if it’s available in the US…!

  3. The Witcher 3 is fantastic! I love the soundtrack, I listen to it as I’m trying to get to sleep! I’m glad it wasn’t just me who struggled with that werewolf! I thought it was incredibly difficult for being one of the first quests. What do you think of Gwent?

The OA sounds like something I would enjoy! Once I’ve finished Grey’s Anatomy (again…) I’ll give it a watch. The illustratedHarry Potter books are stunning. Apparently Jim Kay will be at one of the Harry Potter Book Night events in London, I wish I could be there.

I haven’t had anything from Papa John’s since I was in second year! I really want to try it again, now! ‘The Amy’ sounds ike a delicious pizza =p

    1. I haven’t really gotten into Gwent yet, to be honest. I’ve only played it once or twice ‘cos I’ve been so busy doing the main quests. Is it good?

  4. The OA was amazing! I actually watched the first episode and thought about not continuing because I wasn’t sure where it would go. I am so glad I decided to stick to it!! 😀

I am intrigued by the illustrated editions of Harry Potter!

    Thanks for sharing these! 😀

  5. I loved The OA, too! Season two started filming this month, which is slightly disappointing because it means it probably won’t premiere until later this year?? I most loved it for the complex lead character, and the fact that such a character is female. It was really weird and a bit eerie, but I think it’s what kept me watching—and there being a lightness to it amidst the dark themes.

One of Us is Lying is on my TBR! It feels like the edgy crime/murder mystery I’ve been craving, without having to watch Lifetime.

Papa John’s Pizza is what I like if Little Caesar’s is out of the question, but have you ever had Papa Murphy’s?? I don’t know if they have franchises in many other parts; they’re popular to a select group of people who want (and love) homemade pizza—the freshness, the taste, the fragrance, the appeal—but don’t mind making it at home. It’s 😘😘😘😘. I don’t get it often, though, ’cause it’s a little more expensive.

For myself, lately I’ve been enjoying the convenience of frozen burritos and reading books. I binged some shows on Netflix, but I don’t want to renew it since I have a hosting bill to pay and don’t watch it enough?? I’ve been favoring books more, especially since I have come into possession books I have been waiting impatiently for. I do love a lot of nerdy, teeny-bopper CW shows, however. 😳 (I tried really hard not to.)

    1. I was so annoyed when I found out they hadn’t finished The OA season two. I need to know what happens now! You can’t just leave it on a cliffhanger like that!

I don’t think we have Papa Murphy’s over here, though there could be some in London. It sounds amazing – I love all pizza though!

I used to have that issue with Netflix. I barely used it the first year I had it, but I’ve gotten really into it now. You can always join again if you want it back!

  6. Loving this new series!

“The past month or so has involved a lot of reading, a lot of eating and a lot of sitting around watching Netflix,” < basically my life in general, aha.

Omg, I remember when I discovered the OA! It was such a trippy series but I absolutely loved it. I cannot wait for season 2. Jason Isaacs was such a creeper. Like wow.

ALSO I AM STILL NOT OVER THE FACT THAT NETFLIX CANCELLED SENSE8. I am still devastated 😭 The scene with 'What's Up' definitely made me tear up, as well.

*whispers* I need to get those HP books when I get paid *cough*

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus < I'VE READ THIS AND IT WAS SO GOOD, OMG.

Lately, I've loving this podcast I've discovered called Say Your Mind! Soooo funny and relatable 🙂

Looking forward to more of these posts!

  7. I love this post idea! I’m a little clueless when it comes to finding new things to watch and books to read but I am a bit stuck on old favorites/classics. But I’ve been trying new books lately on recommendations and it hasn’t been wrong yet.

Also, it is bad that I have never read Harry Potter? I’ve only ever seen the first movies and I have been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but that’s because my best friend is obsessed. So, I took her for her birthday.

  8. I was also disappointed when Sense8 got canceled, but I can see why they canceled it. I would imagine the show is extremely expensive and time-consuming to make. It really couldn’t last like eight seasons.

Me, personally, I prefer my pizza plain with just cheese, although lately I’ve been experimenting with half cheese and half olives. I’m enjoying the olives, surprisingly.

And, of course, I’m jealous you read all those books. I hate you. :p

  9. I like seeing entries where people share things that they like! I learn about new things as well 🙂 I’ve heard a lot of good things about The OA and Sense8, though I haven’t seen them yet. Hopefully I’ll get around to them!

I didn’t even know there were illustrated editions of the Harry Potter books! That’s so nifty. The other books you mentioned sound like interesting reads too. I feel like ‘One of Us is Lying’ is especially up my alley. Thanks for sharing!

  10. I always love reading up what people have been interested in lately! You’re finding all of these interesting shows! Ok, I know I would like The Witcher 3 because I love witch characters for some reason??

Ok, I legit haven’t watched any HP films since the first one. I am totally missing out *o*.

HAHA! I am with you about pineapples belonging on pizza. You go, girl!

  11. I love this series idea! I can’t wait to see future ones – I am always so interested in what people are liking at the moment because of the diversity of interests 😀 Always inspires me to look further what I’m interested in.

I’ve never read or watched any HP – I know I really should *hides*

OMG, I LOVE THE SUN AND HER FLOWERS I bought it late last year – probably the only physical book I’ll ever buy. It’s honestly one of THE best poetry books out there haha. I love how it’s written, I don’t get bored but more enticed to read on!

  12. I have One Of Us is Lying on my list!! Also, thank you for writing about the other books – I think Furiously Happy and Anything You Do Say are going to be ones I will enjoy. Also ugh I’m freaked out walking home alone as it is. SHIIIiiiiiit. 😆

Sense8 sounds really good as well but I have never heard of it! Shame it got cancelled. A lot of my favourite shows got cancelled back in the day. 💩 Now I watch no television shows. 💩💩

I really like reading people’s posts about what their favourite things are but I never thought of doing my own. For some reason I’ve always felt that I wouldn’t be able to remember or would have very little favourite things to write about. But the fact that you’re doing them sporadically and not every month kinda makes sense to me. Maybe you have just inspired me to do something similar and not feel the pressure of doing something every month. 😉
