Life Catch-Up: Christmas 2017

The past month or so has been spent prepping for Christmas. I spent a couple of weekends doing crazy amounts of Christmas shopping, and hours and hours wrapping everything. I realised being prepared is incredibly annoying when you live in a small house and have to spend a month tripping over presents and decorations. We put the tree up, did the yearly trip to the Leeds German Christmas market with our friends, and got annoyed when we had to go to work in the snow. I got a small promotion at work, which I’d spent ages working hard for, and we celebrated with an amazing meal at Jamie’s Italian. It’s been a fairly quiet couple of months on the socialising front, because everyone’s so busy at this time of year, but I’ve kind of enjoyed spending more time relaxing at home.

Saying that, the week before last I had way too much time on my hands. I was off from work for two days because of illness, and honestly, I got so bored. I seriously couldn’t cope if I didn’t have a job. Yeah, it’s nice spending time at home relaxing, but I being stuck in the house ill gets old fast. Never have I been happier that I have a full-time job doing something I love!

Christmas

Christmas Eve was split between mine and Andy’s family, involving a mix of chinese food, early present-opening and lovely catch-ups. We opened lots of presents at Andy’s grandparents’ house, as we wouldn’t see them on Christmas morning, which really got me feeling festive. I’d not been feeling very Christmassy at all this year, so it was really nice to finally get into the spirit.

After a few hours there, we went down to my parents’ house for a lovely chinese takeaway, some Christmas Eve boxes which involved really noisy voice-changer toys, and relaxing on the sofa watching It’ll Be Alright on The Night.

Christmas Day is a bit of a blurry, tired mess, to be honest. I barely got any sleep after Christmas Eve, because I stupidly thought I could fight the rest of my cough without any medication, which resulted in being up most of the night in pain. I still had an amazing time, even though the majority of it was spent trying not to fall asleep on the sofa.

Yes, this is the second year in a row where I’ve fallen asleep watching Gremlins. Oops.

This year, my sister got us all tonnes and tonnes of presents and I felt like I was a child again. It took us hours to open them all and we even had to have a couple of tea breaks because it was so tiring!

I also surprised my mum and sister with a Pandora bracelet each, and I absolutely loved seeing their faces as they opened them. They definitely weren’t expecting them! My mum has since spent all her Christmas money on the Pandora website to fill her bracelet, so I’m sure my dad is tired of hearing about charms, clips and safety chains. #SorryNotSorry

The rest of the day was spent eating food, watching telly and playing Christmas-themed games. I also ended up wearing a velcro Christmas pudding hat so my family could throw balls at my head. Why do things like this happen every year?!

On Boxing Day we went back to Andy’s grandparents’ house for a nice festive buffet lunch, where I ate way more than I should have. They had some absolutely amazing mini steak and ale pies, which I definitely need to eat again and again and again and again and again. Unfortunately, we had to leave early as I wasn’t feeling well, but it was still nice all the same.

Here are a few of the things I got this year:

Lego Batgirl and Joker
Lego Brickheadz (The Joker was for my birthday, but they look better together, okay?)

BB-8 mug, R2-D2 mug and Darth Vader mug

Chewbacca mug, Deathstar mug, Stormtrooper mug
The best Star Wars mugs ever!
BB-8 pizza cutter
A pizza cutter from a galaxy far, far away

The rest of this week involved lovely meals with friends, an amazing day out for afternoon tea with my mum and sales shopping. Oh, and getting the house organised. We got so many presents that we could barely move for gift bags, so I ended up having to rearrange things in the hope of getting the presents away. It’s still not quite sorted, but at least we can move now.

The Blog

In other news, I’m taking some time away from blogging, which means there’ll be no posts for a month or so. This is because I’ve spent the last three years or so thinking about the blog pretty much constantly. This might seem weird, because I’m hardly a regular poster, but most nights over the past few years have been spent attempting to write posts and procrastinating, or taking half-decent photos to accompany them. As much as I love blogging, I’d really like a month to reorganise my priorities and see how I can fit blogging into my life, rather than trying to fit my life around blogging. I want to see what I’d do with my evenings without the pressure of getting posts out. I’ll still be reading and commenting on all your posts, I just won’t be staring at my WordPress dashboard for hours on end.

And hopefully I’ll come back in February as a more organised and happier blogger.

Hope you all had lovely Christmases and see you in February!

  1. Haha I love the comment about tripping over your tree and gifts all month because that’s exactly what we were doing too (we have a teeny tiny place!). Kudos to you for knowing when you need a break from the blogging! Sometimes, taking some space can bring you back so much more energized and inspired. I hope you have an amazing start to your year, and we’ll see you when you return!

  2. OMG I totally agree with you! I remember when I was on my placement year working full time, and was off sick for a few days, I was SO bored. I was so ready to jump back up and go to work even though I could’ve easily taken the days off!

It sounds like you had an amazing Christmas! Similar to mine actually, I was lucky enough to have loads of presents gifted to me from Matt’s family and my own and honestly felt like a little girl again!

I hope your cold is better now!

No worries about taking the month off, you deserve it. Sometimes we do need to step back and re-evaluate things and come back feeling awesome and inspired!

    Have a fab month!

  3. Christmas is always keeping people busy with all of the planning and shopping! It sucks being sick but at least you got to spend some time to recover. Sounds like you had a nice Christmas Eve celebration with the families. Ugh, I can totally relate to the coughing and stuff. Hope you’re feeling better now.

It’s sweet of you to surprise your mother and sister with Pandora bracelets. They’re so adorable!

The Star Wars mugs are so cute! I am so in love with BB-8 XD.

Hope you will have a nice time with your break from blogging. Definitely understandable because blogging is supposed to be a hobby and you shouldn’t be stressing out over posting. Take care 🙂

  4. I’ve never heard of eating Chinese food for Christmas, but that’s definitely making me hungry. I’ve been wanting Chinese food lately. 😛

It’s awesome that you got a lot of presents, and playing games sounds fun too.

I’ve actually never seen any Star Wars movies, but those mugs are pretty cool for SW fans.

  5. Congrats on the promotion at work! I know what you mean about needing to work. I took a week and a half off of work, and I’ve been such a lazy bum that I miss being productive. I’m actually kind of looking forward to going back tomorrow.

Sounds like you had a fun Christmas! It always feels great when you pick out that perfect gift for someone. Nice job on the Pandora bracelets for your mom and sister! I also love the gifts that you got, especially the Star Wars mugs. Those are so cool!

I think that makes sense to take a break! It’s hard not to have burnout after owning a blog for so long, and your personal life should always take priority. I hope you figure out what works best for you! Enjoy the break away from the blog!

  6. When I was on medical leave for a month and a half after my surgery, I went absolutely crazy not working. At first, I embraced it, it was nice having time off work, I enjoyed relaxing, but after about a week, I started getting a bit stir crazy for falling out of routine – like I was losing control of my life.

    Congrats on your promotion. 🙂

Chinese food is one of my favorites. Definitely an awesome choice for Christmas time. Your Christmas sounded relaxing.

    Happy New Year!

  7. It’s great that work can be a good distraction and keeps you busy. Congratulations on the promotion! 😀

Awww, that was nice of your sister to buy a lot of gifts for everyone! It would have been exciting. 😀 Haha, nice work on the charm bracelet. You can tell she loved it. :’)

Awww, those gifts are fantastic. 😀

I wish you all the best for 2018 and your hiatus. Sometimes you just have to do it and focus on what is essential. 🙂

  8. Congrats on your promotion! That’s awesome that all your hard work paid off. Your Christmas sounds like it was really fun. It’s nice that you got to spend it with your family on both sides but also got to spend it relaxing. It sounds like you’ve been really busy! And your pizza cutter and Star Wars mugs are really cute!

See you in February! I like how you said you want to see how blogging fits around your life, rather than your life fitting around blogging. Have a well-rested blog break!

  9. Happy New Year, Amy!

I literally did my Christmas on the 23rd December, which is probably the latest I’ve ever left it. It was honestly a mad rush to TK Maxx and then spending ages wrestling with the stupid amount of racks they have T_T

Congratulations on your promotion at work! You definitely deserve it <3

Sorry to hear you were ill over the Christmas period, though. Hope you're feeling better now! I LOVE your presents, especially the BB-8 pizza cutter. I need that in my life.

It's always good take a break. Even though mine was unexpected when I took, it did a world of good and when I came back, I had was full of ideas. See you in Feb, can't wait to see what you bring back to us <3

  10. These are all so great, I especially love the pizza cutter! And it’s so lovely that you bought your mum and sister a pandora bracelet each, it’s lovely to see people’s faces light up when you get them something they really weren’t expecting. One of my friends got me s Pandora necklace for this Christmas, so I can really sympathise with your mum stalking the website for new charms for hours lol.

    Here’s to 2018!

  11. It sounds like you had a lovely Christmas with your family. Go and enjoy your break from blogging. I’m afraid to take a break from blogging. I’m already lazy as is. I’ll be too relaxed, lol.

  12. Sounds like a lovely Christmas and I’m so very jealous of your Star Wars goodies! Hope you’re feeling better soon – and good luck sorting out your priorities… have a productive relaxing break 🙂

  13. I’m sorry you were sick over Christmas! 😞 That would have really dampened the mood. I think you got some really cool presents though, also that BB-8 pizza cutter??!! That’s SO Amy 😱

Sometimes when I take days off work because I am sick, I feel even worse, mentally. I think it’s just the feeling of being cooped up alone and feeling like shit and it feels like you’re wallowing in your own boo-hoo-ness and you can’t shake the feeling until you feel better enough to make it to work and feel normal. I totally feel you there!

I used to really like Pandora bracelets but now I don’t wear mine very much. Maybe on special occasions sometimes. I have one that I particularly like that has a bunch of my favourite charms on it – it’s the rose gold clasp one and a lot of the charms I have on it are rose gold. All my other charms sit on another bangle and I feel “meh” about it. The cost of those charms adds up too!

Taking a break from blogging sounds like a good idea especially if it’s wearing you out and you’re feeling forced. That’s not the right way to feel! 💕
